　　Explorer Ferdinand Magellan

　　Portuguese name: Fernao de Magalhaes

　　Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer. He was born in Sabrosa, in northern Portugal, and served King Charles I of Spain in search of a westward route to the Spice Islands .

　　Magellans expedition of 1519~1521 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean , and the first to cross the Pacific. It also completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, although Magellan himself did not complete the entire voyage, being killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines.

　　Magellan also gives his name to the Magellanic Penguin, which he was the first European to note, and the Magellanic clouds, now known to be nearby dwarf galaxies.

　　斐迪南麥哲倫，葡萄牙人，為西班牙政府效力探險(xiǎn)。1519年-1521年率領(lǐng)船隊(duì)首次環(huán)航地球，死于菲律賓的部族沖突中。雖然他沒有親自環(huán)球，他船上的水手在他死后繼續(xù)向西航行，回到歐洲。

　　環(huán)球航行的經(jīng)過

　　1519年9月20日，麥哲倫探險(xiǎn)船隊(duì)駛離了西班牙。探險(xiǎn)船隊(duì)的5艘遠(yuǎn)洋海船在大西洋的驚濤駭浪中航行。11月19日，探險(xiǎn)船隊(duì)利用東北季風(fēng)和赤道海流，沿非洲西海岸南下。當(dāng)船隊(duì)行駛到佛得角群島時，轉(zhuǎn)向西行，橫渡大西洋，到達(dá)南美洲巴西海岸。1520年5月中旬，為了找到通往太平洋的航線，麥哲倫派出一艘遠(yuǎn)洋帆船向南航行，探索航路，但不慎觸礁受損。這樣，當(dāng)麥哲倫探險(xiǎn)船隊(duì)再次揚(yáng)帆起航時只剩下四艘遠(yuǎn)洋帆船。
